Rabbit & Bear: Attack of the Snack | Review

By author Julian Gough and illustrator Jim Field (Hodder Children’s Books)

There are some books that can get younger readers (and me!) chuckling before they even open the cover. One such series is ‘The Bad Guys’ by Aaron Blabey, and another is Gough and Field’s ‘Rabbit and Bear’.

‘Attack of the Snack’ opens with calm Bear and moody Rabbit having a soak and “the best day ever” in a peaceful lake…that is until (in Rabbit’s words) “the most hideous thing in the world” flies over their heads and hits a tree. Suddenly it becomes “the worst day ever” as the thing drops into the lake and Bear has to pull the soggy object out.

Rabbit overreacts, as always, leaving poor Bear to handle the situation and the hapless waterlogged bundle. Rabbit’s voice is like that of a small irrational child, while Bear takes the role of an older sibling trying their best to keep things under control and keep Rabbit calm.

These books are a rib-tickling joy from start to finish, and the brilliant characters brought to life with Field’s illustrations double the fun. ‘Attack of the Snack’ is the third entry in the series, and delivers just as much heart and silliness as the previous two.

A great addition to any young reader’s bookshelf, these stories about the adventures of the most unlikely of friendships are a must!
