The Midnight Hour | Book Review

By Benjamin Read and Laura Trinder (Chicken House)

When her parents go missing and aren’t answering their phones, Emily and her trusty hedgehog sidekick have no choice but to go in search of them.

In this fast-paced and thrilling story, Emily has to make her way to the city of the Night Folk – a Victorian London frozen in time.

Not always helped by her impetuous nature and big mouth, she makes firm friends (and some deadly enemies) as she tries to trace her parents, while also trying to untangle family secrets beyond imagination.

I loved the style of the “steampunk-esque” London, filled to the brim with magic (some of it which is quite dark!) and peopled by weird, wonderful and occasionally very dangerous monsters. The compelling story draws you further and further in with every twist, and Emily is a wonderful protagonist to be following along.

Tense and chilling, especially in the final battle, the book leaves the reader wanting to know more about the mysterious and fascinating world of The Midnight Hour – which is good, as this is the first entry in a trilogy!
